Privacy Policy

Last updated August 2026

1. Scope

This Privacy Policy describes how Jordan Gardner (“we”, “us”) collects, uses and discloses information in connection with the Tongan-English Dictionary mobile application for iOS and Android (the “App”) and this website (the “Site”). It applies to no other product or service.

The App and the Site collect information separately and are governed by separate controls. Consenting to, or declining, collection in one has no effect on the other.

2. The dictionary is stored on your device

The complete dictionary is bundled with the App and stored locally. Reading, browsing and searching it are performed entirely on your device and require no network connection. The information described in section 3 is collected for analytical purposes only. It is not required in order to operate the dictionary, and the App remains fully functional if you decline it.

3. Information collected through the App

Where analytics collection is enabled (see section 6), the App collects the following categories of information:

  • (a) Usage and interaction data. Records of the screens you open within the App and of certain actions you take — for example opening a dictionary entry, following a cross-reference, changing the browse language, changing the theme or app icon, or opening or submitting an issue report. Each record identifies the screen or action and, where applicable, the identifier of the dictionary entry concerned and the language being browsed.
  • (b) Search queries. The words and phrases you enter into the App’s search field, together with the language searched and the number of results returned. A query is recorded only once you stop typing, so that a single search is recorded once rather than once per keystroke.
  • (c) Approximate location. Our analytics provider derives an approximate location — typically country, region and city — from the internet protocol (IP) address over which the data is transmitted. The App does not request access to your device’s location services and holds no such permission. No precise or satellite-derived location is collected.
  • (d) Device and installation data. Device model, operating system version, App version, device language, and a randomly generated installation identifier used to distinguish one installation from another so that users and sessions can be counted. That identifier is not derived from any hardware identifier, and is deleted if you disable collection.

4. Information the App does not collect

For the avoidance of doubt, the App does not collect, and we do not receive:

  • your name, email address, telephone number or postal address;
  • any account credentials — the App has no sign-in, no user accounts and no profiles;
  • any advertising identifier, including the Android Advertising ID and the iOS Identifier for Advertisers, collection of both being disabled in the App’s configuration;
  • precise or satellite-derived location;
  • your contacts, photographs, files, or the contents of any other application.

The App displays no advertising. We do not use the information described in section 3 to build advertising or marketing profiles, do not track you across other applications or websites, and do not sell, rent or otherwise disclose that information to third parties except as described in section 11.

5. Purpose of processing

The information described in section 3 is processed for the sole purpose of understanding how the App is used — in order to prioritize transcription work, identify words which are searched for but not found, and determine which parts of the App warrant improvement. It is not used to make any decision about an individual.

We rely on our legitimate interest in maintaining and improving the App. Where your consent is the applicable basis under the law of your jurisdiction, the control described in section 6 is the means by which that consent may be given or withdrawn.

6. Your control over collection in the App

Collection may be disabled at any time from Settings → Privacy → Share Usage Data within the App. It is enabled by default.

Disabling it halts collection at the level of the analytics software development kit, with the effect that no further information — including the automatic records of application launches and sessions — is gathered or transmitted. Records held on the device and not yet transmitted are discarded, and the installation identifier described in section 3(d) is deleted. The setting persists across restarts and updates of the App.

7. Information collected through the Site

The Site uses Google Analytics to measure how many people visit and which pages are consulted. It is disabled by default. No analytics cookie is written and no analytics request is made unless you select Accept on the consent notice.

The Site implements Google Consent Mode, under which the analytics tag is instructed to refuse storage until consent is given. Advertising signals are refused permanently irrespective of your choice; the Site carries no advertising and builds no advertising profiles. Consent may be withdrawn at any time using Cookie settings in the footer, and withdrawal takes effect immediately.

8. Cookies used by the Site

td_consent
Records whether you accepted or declined analytics, so that you are not asked again on every page. Set only once a choice has been made, retained for 180 days, and readable only by this Site. A cookie which stores a privacy preference is itself strictly necessary, and is therefore set whichever option you select.
_ga, _ga_*
Google Analytics. These distinguish one visitor from another so that visit counts are meaningful. Set only if you select Accept. If you decline, they are never written.

9. Issue reports

If you report a problem with a dictionary entry from within the App, the report transmits the entry concerned, the category selected, the description you write, and the App version. It does not transmit your name or email address, and contains nothing identifying unless you enter such information into the description yourself.

10. The supporter contribution

The App offers a single optional one-time contribution, described in our Terms of Use. Payment is taken by Apple or by Google, who act as the seller of record. We never receive, and have no means of receiving, your name, billing address, card number or any other payment detail. What reaches us is the fact that a purchase exists.

Whether that purchase is valid is checked through RevenueCat, acting as our processor. For this purpose the App generates a random identifier for the installation and sends it, together with the store receipt and basic device and store information such as the platform, App version and country of the store account, to RevenueCat. That identifier is not your name and is not linked to any account with us; it exists so that the App can ask one question — whether this installation has an entitlement.

This processing is not governed by the analytics setting described in section 6, and is not optional in the way analytics is: without it a purchase could neither be recognized nor restored. It occurs only if you choose to contribute, or press Restore Purchase. It is unrelated to the information described in section 3, and the two are never combined.

11. Service providers and international transfer

Analytics for both the App and the Site are provided by Google — Google Analytics, and Google Analytics for Firebase in the case of the App — acting as our processor. The information described in sections 3 and 7 is transmitted to and stored by Google on infrastructure which may be located outside your country of residence, including in the United States, and is handled in accordance with Google’s Privacy Policy. Issue reports submitted from the App are delivered to a Google Form and stored in the associated spreadsheet.

Purchase validation for the App is provided by RevenueCat, Inc., acting as our processor, on infrastructure located in the United States and handled in accordance with RevenueCat’s Privacy Policy. Payment itself is taken by Apple or by Google as seller of record, under Apple’s and Google’s respective privacy policies rather than this one.

We disclose no information to any other third party, save where required to do so by law.

12. Retention

Analytics records are retained by Google for the period configured in our Google Analytics property, after which they are deleted automatically. Aggregate statistics which no longer identify any installation may be retained indefinitely. Issue reports are retained for as long as is necessary to act upon them.

13. Your rights

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the right to request access to, correction of, or deletion of personal data relating to you, to object to or restrict its processing, and to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.

Because the information described in section 3 is not associated with your name, email address or any account, we are ordinarily unable to determine which records relate to a particular individual, and may therefore be unable to act upon a request without further information which would itself enable identification. The most direct remedy available to you is to disable collection as described in section 6, which halts further collection and deletes the installation identifier.

14. Children

The App and the Site are general-audience reference works and are not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.

15. Changes to this policy

This policy may be amended from time to time. The date at the head of this page records when it was last revised. Material changes to the categories of information collected, or to the purposes for which they are used, will be reflected here before the change takes effect in a released version of the App.

16. Contact

Questions about this policy, and requests relating to it, may be directed to the contact form.
